POSSESSION and
TRANSITION
“Win it; Move it!”
Winning the ball is
only half of it. Get your eyes up and get the ball downfield. Options:
run fast forward with eyes up (looking for a teammate); pass the ball
outside 1st,
then downfield; back pass to opposite side (pass back weave).
*Draw
Control (DC)
Mentality,
“I own this circle, I own this draw, I own this ball!”’ left handed draw; boxing
out; if we don’t win the ball, get the ball back on the ground;
create a
50/50 ball.
4 players stand
inside the draw circle with a
bucket of balls. 1st round: player inside tosses a
draw-like
flip to partner standing behind. Practice reaching high, going hard
right and
left, etc. 2nd round: toss now goes to partners who
work on
blocking out and then winning the ball
*Ground Balls (GB)
GBs: Attack the ball, accelerate
and look to
pass; create an immediate advantage. Teach
the anticipation that must happen off ball in order to make this
possible—2
players on 45s
*RIDE/CLEAR (Note:
we’re
calling this “BREAKOUT” this year to try and change the mentality)
This
is Transition and it ends
up being the area that needs the most work throughout
the season. Ride—we lost the
ball in our offensive end and now we need to get it back! Yes, our
attackers
need to be able to play 1v1 defense and get the ball stopped/slowed—use
the body not stick; double team-make their
next pass predictable; move while the ball is in the air—Must
be in great shape! The
ride is everything!
*FITNESS
*DEFENSE and ATTACK
The “Take-On Artist”—individual duels—the team that
wins the
majority of these duels in a game, wins the majority of the games.
Duels=beating players 1v1, shutting players down in all 1v1 situations
including DCs, 50/50 balls, attack, defense, etc.
1v1 Top Gun (without
Gs)—play last 2
or 3 minutes (C decides); players hit the cone (or small soccer goal)
by
beating the other player 1-on-1; 1 point is earned for each hit, and
then ball
changes possession. Missed shots must be chased by both players—no cone
hanging! You may have a 1v1 occurring with real goals and 2 Gs if they
are
ready to go.
1v1-G—this involves
the G, and
either the D or G makes a throw (could be long) to O player.
*STICK SKILLS
Throwing,
Catching,
Dodges, and Shooting
Offensive
Emphasis: Attack
the catches, passing to the correct hand, catching and throwing with
R+L;
incorporate more of the guys’ 1v1 game; off ball screens to free up
cuts/to
flash to ball
Middle Player
pivots and
catches from opposite post (30 seconds) [Ball in the air on pivot]
Zig
zag (45 degree moves), Split (“head, shoulders, and step” fake
one way, and “split” her in opposite direction), Face (elbow comes
right across
face of D), One handed (drop head of stick down in a scoop motion),
Inside Roll
(on the crease), Rocker (drive up 8m and “rock” back), and Back out
(begin to
“back out” of 1v1, but then dart back into attack)
*SMALL BALL
Defense: Calling out
#s every
time; sticks up; footwork, forcing,
recovery, no big check; pressure the ball behind; pressure
defense—switching on
everything initially, then doubling from that
Defensive
footwork: High, fly/low, slow
Teach Base
Offense: “Pass and move away” to “cut
through” to “screen away”
